COP29 Express News Series (6) – Telling Hong Kong’s sustainable development story to the world

【 The Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Education for Sustainable Development (HiESD) and the President of the World Institute of Sustainable Development Planners (WISDP) met with representatives of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) at COP29】

In November 2024, the Hong Kong Institute of Education for Sustainable Development (HiESD) and the World Institute of Sustainable Development Planners (WISDP) team went to Baku to participate in the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), bringing along various flagship publications of HiESD as a regional reporter of the United Nations Global Compact. These include the “United Nations Global Compact Hong Kong Regional Report 2022-2023,” the “Sustainable Development Innovative Technology Solutions Report,” and the “Carbon Literacy and Low-Carbon Lifestyle Bilingual Textbooks.”.

During the conference, participants from all over the world, including governments, corporations, scientific research institutes, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and media, accessed the report in paper-based and electronic formats.

 

The HiESD is an expert partner and service provider of the UNIDO. Professor Karen Cheung visited the UNIDO Pavilion at COP29 and presented the report to Mr. Zou Ciyong, Deputy to the Director General of UNIDO, and Mr. Liu Heng, Senior Technical Advisor of the Department of Energy of UNIDO, and shared Hong Kong’s unique path to promoting sustainable development.

The HiESD is a regional reporting organisation of the UNGC. Professor Karen Cheung, the director of HiESD and the president of the WISDP, visited the COP29 UNGC pavilion and presented the “UNGC Hong Kong Regional Report 2022-2023,” published by the HiESD to representatives of the UNGC.

Professor Karen Cheung also presented the report to representatives of institutions from different fields, including:

 

• Deputy Director Lv Wenbin, the Energy Research Institute of the Chinese National Development and Reform Commission

• Dr. Bai Quan, Director of the Energy Efficiency Centre of the Energy Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission of China

• President Zhu Liyang, the China Association of Circular Economy

• Chairman Zhang Ruoyan, the Beijing Green Exchange

• Mr. Tse Chin-wan, BBS, JP, Secretary for Environment and Ecology of the HKSARG

• Mr. Wong Chuen-fai, the Commissioner for Climate Change of the Secretary for Environment and Ecology of the HKSARG
